National Union of Journalism, Media, and Communication Condemns Interim Committee Head’s Return to Expelling Union Activists and Holds Government Responsible

Rabat – July 3, 2025

The National Union of Journalism, Media, and Communication issued a strongly worded statement condemning the return of the head of the interim committee managing the press and publishing sector to his preferred method of expelling union activists. The union holds the government and its head fully responsible for the ongoing deterioration within the National Press Council.

The union affirmed that the interim committee head continues, in blatant defiance of the law and a direct assault on union freedoms, a systematic campaign of repression against union work within the National Press Council. This conduct flagrantly violates the constitution, labor code provisions, and international agreements ratified by Morocco.

The statement highlighted that the arbitrary dismissal of activists Wiam Harsh and Huda Al-Alami—excluded without any legal basis other than their affiliation with the Moroccan Workers’ Union—was only the beginning of a series of serious administrative abuses. Recently, the national secretary of the National Union of Staff and Employees of the National Press Council was also abruptly and unjustifiably expelled, revealing a deliberate intent to dismantle union activity within this national institution and to eradicate the most representative union by any means, even if it requires breaking the law and misusing public funds.

The union added that the situation at the National Press Council is no longer isolated violations but a systematic policy aimed at dismantling the union, undermining fundamental freedoms, and silencing dissenting voices within the institution. The interim committee head is reportedly seeking opportunities to expel other union bureau members, disregarding all professional, ethical, and institutional commitments, and exploiting public funds as a tool for revenge and purge.

Demands of the National Union of Journalism, Media, and Communication

In light of this grave situation that threatens the core of union rights and professional and social stability within the institution, the union declares the following:

  • Unconditional solidarity with General Secretary Abdelrahim Al-Rawi and activists Huda Al-Alami and Wiam Harsh against these assaults on the right to work, job security, and freedom of union activity;
  • Strong condemnation of the interim committee head’s repeated violations of national laws whenever he fails to manage council affairs and resolve disputes, resorting instead to harsh, illegal measures, and misusing public funds rather than striving to improve council performance, social peace, and the development of journalism and media professions;
  • Organization of a protest and warning sit-in in front of the National Press Council headquarters, with participation from members of the Moroccan Workers’ Union National Secretariat, sending a clear message that union work is a red line that cannot be compromised.

The union calls on all activists in the sector to participate actively and strongly in this critical struggle and urges all union and human rights organizations to express their rejection of these serious regressions.

The union holds the government, which appointed this committee against the demands of various national sector bodies, fully responsible for colluding with these dangerous practices that deeply undermine Morocco’s human rights commitments and constitutional institutions.
