Morocco Marks 56th Anniversary of the Recovery of Sidi Ifni: A National Epic Remembered

The Moroccan people, led by members of the Resistance and the Liberation Army, are commemorating the 56th anniversary of the recovery of Sidi Ifni, a historic milestone that marked the end of foreign military presence in the city on June 30, 1969.

A Glorious Chapter in Morocco’s National Struggle

Like many other regions of the Kingdom, Sidi Ifni played a pivotal role in the Moroccan liberation movement. The city witnessed heroic resistance and popular uprisings against Spanish colonial rule, notably led by the tribes of Aït Baamrane, who made profound sacrifices to defend the nation’s unity, sovereignty, and sacred values.

Some of the most notable battles include:

  • The Battle of Tebloukoukt
  • Tigza and Boursas Clashes
  • The Battle of Sidi Ifni, in which Moroccan freedom fighters imposed a fierce siege on colonial strongholds.

From Armed Resistance to Diplomatic Victory

Following years of armed resistance and sustained pressure from both Moroccan forces and local fighters, Spain was eventually forced to enter into political negotiations. These talks led to the recovery of Tarfaya in 1958, and ultimately Sidi Ifni in 1969.

The liberation struggle was strongly supported by the historic speeches of the late King Mohammed V and King Hassan II, particularly Mohammed V’s famous address in Mahmid El Ghizlane (1958) and Hassan II’s tribute to the people of Ifni in 1972.

A Step Toward Full Territorial Unity

The recovery of Sidi Ifni was a key milestone on the path to completing Morocco’s territorial integrity, culminating in the Green March on November 6, 1975, and the final withdrawal of Spanish troops from Laayoune on February 28, 1976.

A New Era of Development Under King Mohammed VI

Under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, Morocco’s southern provinces have become a model of advanced regionalization and integrated development. Strategic royal projects, modern infrastructure, and strengthened ties with Africa have transformed the region into a driver of national and continental growth.

National Celebrations and Honoring Resistance Veterans

To mark this historic anniversary, the High Commission for Former Resistance Fighters and Members of the Liberation Army is organizing commemorative events, including official speeches, community gatherings, and tributes to national heroes through the distribution of financial support and awards in recognition of their invaluable sacrifices.
