The rural commune of Bni Ayat, in the province of Azilal, witnessed a tragic incident on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, when a 10-year-old boy lost his life by drowning in an irrigation canal while trying to cool off during a heatwave.
The young victim, a primary school student, had gone to the canal with friends to escape the intense heat. Unfortunately, a strong current originating from the Afourar station swept them away. The boy was dragged under the water in front of his powerless and shocked friends.
Local authorities, including the Civil Protection, the Royal Gendarmerie, and other officials, were immediately alerted and rushed to the scene. The boy’s body was recovered and transferred to the morgue of the regional hospital in Beni Mellal.
The public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of this tragic event.
